Vice President of Protein Expression Sciences

Sylvain Marcel, Ph.D.

Dr. Marcel is the Vice President of Protein Expression Sciences, responsible for upstream process development and expression technologies. He received his Ph.D in plant cell and molecular biology at the RWTH University – Fraunhofer Institute, Aachen, Germany in 2006. Since 2000, Dr. Marcel focused his research and attention to the engineering and characterization of pharmaceutical proteins in plant-expression systems using either transgenic or transient expression approaches.

He joined the team of Dr. Barry Holtz in 2010 to develop and implement the midstream manufacturing protocols during the construction and operation of the Caliber biotherapeutics manufacturing facility (now owned and operated by iBio CDMO) in Bryan, Texas. Since then, as a senior scientist, Dr. Marcel optimized upstream and midstream manufacturing protocols. He also co-designed and operated the pilot-scale facility to produce development-grade material for in vitro and animal testing.

Dr. Marcel published over 17 peer reviewed articles in the field of plant biotechnology and hold one patent related to a glycan remodeling technology.
